Question
I’m a British citizen, but my wife has a foreign nationality, if she need to apply for Indefinite leave to remain (permanent residence) or Citizenship in the UK, does she need to pass the life in the UK test?

Answer

This simply has got nothing to do with your immigration status, ie you being a British Citizen. So unfortunately the answer might be yes !. According to the new rules and regulations imposed by the British government, anyone applying for ILR (permanent residence) or Citizenship has to go through the following check ….

To simply summarize …

  1. If the person’s level of English is ESOL 3 or above then you need to take the Life in the UK test
  2. If level of English is lower than ESOL 3 then You will need to attend combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes

ESOL = English for speakers of other languages

Of course if the person decides to do the Life in the UK test, Free British Citizenship Test questions are available online.

By the way some details about the test

  • cost £34
  • has 24 questions
  • you need to answer at least 18 of the questions correctly
  • pass mark is 75%
  • If you fail the test you can take it again
  • most importantly if you fail the test, you will not be deported !
