The Life in the United Kingdom test is the requirement given by the United Kingdom Border Agency for an applicant to prove sufficient knowledge of life in the UK. This test is computer-based and is must be passed in order to be granted indefinite leave to remain (permanent residence) or British citizenship.

The Home Office has recently made minor changes in the handbooks used by candidates to prepare for their British citizenship test or the Life in the UK test. These changes have been made to correct factual errors previously included in the handbook. The updates made were of information related to immigration in the 1970s, smoking laws, the structure of the Presbyterian Church and child employment law.

Although it is not necessary to purchase the revised editions of the handbooks, knowing what changes have been made to the previous editions are critical to passing the Life in the UK test.

The books listed below are no longer suitable to use to prepare for the test:

  • British Citizenship Test: Study Guide – 1st and 2nd Editions

  • British Citizenship Test: Practice Questions – 1st Edition

  • Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship

  • British Citizenship Test for Dummies

  • Practice Questions and Answers: A Would-be Citizen’s Guide to Life in the UK Test – Tips and Much More

  • Passport to Citizenship: Key to Pass Life in the UK Test

If you have previously bought any of these handbooks, you can download the replacement pages online as an alternative to purchasing the revised editions. However, if you are just about to purchase a handbook, then make sure you are getting the revised edition with the corresponding changes.
