The Life in the UK Test is a computer-based exam in the United Kingdom, in which applicants must take to be able to apply for a British citizenship or an Indefinite Leave to Remain.
To be able to take the exam, one must pay a fee, which is £34.00, and book the exam on the nearest local center on their vicinity. Make sure that you bring the necessary documents and IDs to prove your identity, as they will check it and input your name along with the documents you present to them. The information you give them will be checked again once you take the test.
After registering for the exam, ask them about the official handbook and get a copy of it. This is a very important tool for studying the United Kingdom. You are then free to go and do whatever you wish to do. Of course, you can start studying right after you register for the exam, but you can relax a bit if you want to.
You are given a long time to study (at least a week, or depending on the date you booked the exam), so make use of it. Make a time plan so that you can better manage your time, priorities and schedule.
Read the handbook, and make it a habit to take down notes. These notes can be your handy guide should you lose the handbook.
At the day of the test, go to your assigned local center an hour before the test. Make sure that you bring the following:
- An ID. This is for verification. It can be any of the following:
- A passport (from your country of origin)
- A UK photocard driving license, full or provisional. It is important that this document is up-to-date.
- One of the following Home Office travel documents: a Convention Travel Document, a Certificate of Identity Document or a Stateless Person Document. This document must also be up-to-date.
- An Immigration Status Document
- Home Office Identity Card
- Pen and paper. You might need to fill up something before you can take the test.
- Your written notes. This is for last-minute studying.
The test supervisor will then ask you to provide these documents. Failure to present these documents might bar you from taking the test, and then you will have to pay the £10 administrative fee (for not taking the test). He / she will then verify it against their records if you have really booked for the exam.
Once they have completed verification, you are then asked to wait on a room. Wait for your turn, and if allowed, do some last-minute studying with the notes you have brought. Once your name is called by the test supervisor, give him / her your test notes, where it will be securely destroyed, and proceed to the test room.
Once you finish the test, you are then instructed to wait on another room. After a while, they will call your name and tell you if you have passed or not. They will give you a letter containing a unique ID if you have passed the test. Keep it as you’ll need it to apply for British citizenship.
